The AEC (UK) committee is proud to announce that the updated version of the AEC (UK) CAD Standards for Layer Naming is now available for download. Version 3.0, the latest version of the most widely adopted layering standard in the UK, is released to align better with BS1192:2007’s guidelines and the latest Uniclass classifications. Updates and enhancements include:
Nigel Davies, chair of the AEC (UK) Committee commented, “Even with all the progress we are seeing towards BIM adoption, the importance of data organisation starts with a consistent and clear CAD layering standard. The changes to the AEC (UK) layer standard have been made by the companies using this standard. It’s a testament to the robust, coordinated methods employed by many of the forward-thinking practices in the UK, small and large, that this latest release is as popular and important to the UK design and construction industry as the original was 10 years ago.”
About the AEC (UK) Committee: The AEC (UK) CAD Standards Initiative was formed in 2000 to improve the process of design information production, management and exchange. The committee now produces practical “off-the-shelf” implementations of the guidelines and practices published in the UK, including BS1192:2007. The AEC (UK) committee aims to work together to realise a unified, usable, co-ordinated approach to CAD and BIM in a design environment. Full details can be found on www.aec-uk.org.

Hot off the press, this paper covers the UK government's intentions to streamline construction delivery, through "fully collaborative 3D BIM (with all project and asset information,
documentation and data being electronic) as a minimum by 2016"...

This month, the soapbox returns to its roots with a good old rant. The whole direction of BIM, the way companies are handling its adoption - or not as the case seems to be - is drowning any benefits that it could provide...

Datasets add the ‘I' to ‘BIM', i.e. the Information to Building Information Modeling. They power the Bentley Architecture engine and without datasets, the application is not able to create a building information model and to generate drawings, rendered images and animations, reports, schedules, analysis data and other output. All such outputs depend on different inputs from the datasets. Therefore, it is vital to understand the different dataset components and their interactions, relationships, and dependencies, and how they affect the BIM as well as outputs from the BIM.

To check each workstation using MicroStation only can be a long slow slog, hence why the “External configuration interface” has enjoyed a top ten position in the MicroStation Wish List. So we were very interested to hear from our friends over at Axiom that they had a new product, “Global Workspace Manager” which should fulfil some of those needs...
